Submission: Communique from the Northeastern University Encampment for Gaza

We received the following communique:

FROM SO-CALLED BOSTON ON MASSACHUSETT, MASHPEE, AND WAMPANOAG LAND:

Students and community allies swarmed and took over Centennial Commons at Northeastern University (NU), just as anti-war NU students did in that same area during the Vietnam War. We demanded three specific actions: disclose, divest, denounce.

NU is notorious for its connections to arms dealers like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, and it is considered a feeder school to companies like those. It is also notorious for its esteemed alumnus and Veritas Project supporter Robert Shillman, of whom a building and statue were erected in his name and likeness. It should come as no surprise, either, that NU’s police force shares their values of violence and absolute authority, from brutalizing a 13-year-old black kid in 2020 to profiling black and indigenous grad student union members.

We understood our demands would be met with resistance from the university’s and city’s pig farms. Emerson students were arrested the night before, and admin had gotten word about our setup time. However, we went forward anyway. While things seemed fire for a bit, community and collective student power was enough to overwhelm them back into their pens. On the outside of the encampment, crowds started to form on the outskirts. Beforehand, we called on student and ally support through multiple channels. Admin was getting pissed. Police were ready in riot gear, teasing arrest. But we kept chanting. And people joined the circle. And we tightened our links. We saw Vanderbilt, Columbia, Emerson, MIT, and Tufts erect their encampments. We looked to our education, which is more than just the classroom. It is our duty to speak out and up against the crimes of humanity being committed in our backyard, much like the students before us did. We are still on the ground demanding NU to disclose, divest, and denounce.

Through student power and community solidarity, we will succeed.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
